If you’re a parent, you may be wondering how to measure your child’s shoes, pick the right size, and make sure your girl has a pair of shoes that fit just right. In this guide, we’ll help you do just that – read on, and learn everything you need to know.
How Do Girl Shoe Sizes Work?
There are two primary types of girl shoe sizes. Kids from the age of 1 month to about 4-5 will wear “toddler shoes” which are usually marked with a “T,” and run from size 0-13. A size 5T would be a size 5 toddler shoe. Once your girl is older, and outgrows the largest size 13T toddler shoe, she will move onto “youth” or “big kid” shoes, which are usually marked with a “Y” and run from size 1-7. A size 1Y is larger than a size 13T.
How Are Girls Shoe Sizes Different From Boys Shoe Sizes?
They aren’t! Girls and boys feet develop quite similarly throughout childhood, so toddler and youth shoe sizes are unisex. There is no difference in the size between boys shoe sizes and girls, so that makes things a bit easier for parents.

When To Start Buying Womens Sizes?
You can start thinking about buying womens sizes for your girl once she’s started to wear about a size 4Y or 5Y shoe. This is because womens shoe sizes are actually quite similar in size to youth shoe sizes. A size 7 womens shoe, for example, is usually equal to a size 5Y shoe, though this may vary slightly depending on the brand.
So, once your girl has started wearing a larger youth size, you can consider switching her to a womens shoe, as long as her foot is large enough.

How To Measure Shoes
To measure a shoe, you need to take a measurement of the length of the entire insole, from the tip of the shoe to the heel. Grab the shoe, get a flexible measuring tape, and place the shoe on a flat, level surface.
Grab the measuring tape by the tip, and guide it into the shoe with your index finger, until you hit the end of the shoe. Then, straighten out the tape with your other hand, smooth it, and pull it straight back until you hit the heel of the shoe.
Then, just make a note of the measurement, and that’s it – you’ve successfully measured the interior of your shoe, and you can use that measurement to find the right girls shoe size!
How Do You Know If the Shoe Fits?
You want your girl’s shoe to have about a half inch of room in the front to allow for growth and breathing room. The best way to check this is not with the “thumb test” where you press down on the tip of the shoe with your thumb. This is because your child may curl their toes inward, which will give you an improper measurement.
Instead, grab the front of the shoe with one hand, and use the other hand to feel for a gap at the heel of the shoe, which will indicate that there is enough room for your child’s foot to grow and expand.
